No to celebrating Imperialist Ecocide

Open Letter to the Mayor of Brussels and to Brussels Environment

We, citizens united by the will to build an antifascist, ecological, free, just and peaceful world, urgently call on Brussels Environment and the Mayor of Brussels to refuse the permit requested by the American Embassy for the celebration to be held on 28 June in Cinquantenaire Park in honour of the United States.

To authorise this event would be to actively endorse President Trump’s policies and the world he is imposing upon us.

For decades, the United States has obstructed coordinated climate action while taking countless destructive decisions. The war in the Middle East is only the latest act of terror committed by the United States military, the world’s largest polluter, while the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement destroys even the fragile progress that agreement represented. This government treats our planet as its private property — not least by pouring yet more F-35 jet fuel onto the fire.

We cannot accept this.

How can anyone fail to grasp the symbolic significance of an American celebration at the heart of Europe? How can this government — in a country founded on stolen land, one that flagrantly violates the human rights of its own inhabitants while funding Palestinian genocide and climate collapse — be celebrated in what is supposed to be the world’s greatest democracy, the European Union? This celebration is a celebration of ever-expanding fascism and authoritarianism.

We cannot tolerate this.

At a time when the number of people living in poverty is rising exponentially, this lavish celebration is a final insult to all those who call Brussels and Europe home. How can we be forced to witness this spectacle of the ultra-rich, arms dealers and climate deniers in the heart of our capital, while families struggle every day to pay their rent and put food on the table?

We will not allow this.

We call on the Mayor of Brussels and Brussels Environment not to betray the missions entrusted to them, to assume their responsibilities, and to refuse submission to the authoritarian American regime.

Lettre ouverte au Bourgmestre de Bruxelles et à Bruxelles Environnement,

Nous, citoyennes et citoyens réuni·e·s par la volonté de construire un monde antifasciste, écologique, libre, juste et en paix, nous demandons instamment à Bruxelles Environnement et au Bourgmestre de Bruxelles de refuser le permis demandé par l’ambassade américaine pour la célébration du 28 juin au Parc du Cinquantenaire en l’honneur des États-Unis.

Autoriser cet événement revient à soutenir activement la politique du président Trump et le monde qu’il nous impose.

Les États-Unis font depuis longtemps obstacle à une action climatique coordonnée tout en prenant de nombreuses décisions destructrices. La guerre au Moyen-Orient n’est que le dernier acte de terreur commis par l’armée des États-Unis, le plus grand pollueur au monde, tandis que le retrait de l’Accord de Paris anéantit les faibles progrès que cet accord représentait. Ce gouvernement utilise notre planète comme sa propriété privée, notamment en jetant davantage de carburant pour avions F-35 sur le feu.

Nous ne pouvons pas l’accepter.

Comment ne pas voir l’importance symbolique d’une célébration américaine au cœur de l’Europe ? Comment ce gouvernement — dans un pays fondé sur des terres volées, qui viole outrageusement les droits humains de ses habitant·e·s tout en finançant le génocide du peuple palestinien et l’effondrement climatique — peut-il être fêté dans ce qui est censé être la plus grande démocratie du monde, l’Union européenne ? Cette célébration est celle d’un fascisme et d’un autoritarisme toujours grandissant.

Nous ne pouvons pas le tolérer.

Alors que le nombre de personnes vivant dans la pauvreté augmente de manière exponentielle, cette célébration fastueuse est le coup de grâce pour toutes celle et ceux qui considèrent Bruxelles et l’Europe comme leur foyer. Comment pouvons-nous être contraint·e·s d’admirer ce spectacle d’ultra-riches, des vendeurs d’armes et des négationnistes du climat au cœur de notre capitale, alors que des familles peinent à payer leur loyer et à manger tous les jours ?

Nous ne le permettrons pas.

Nous appelons le Bourgmestre de Bruxelles et Bruxelles Environnement à ne pas trahir les missions qui sont les leurs, à prendre leurs responsabilités et à refuser de se soumettre au régime autoritaire américain.

Open brief aan de burgemeester van Brussel en aan Leefmilieu Brussel,

Wij, burgers verenigd door de wil om een antifascistische, ecologische, vrije, rechtvaardige en vreedzame wereld op te bouwen, vragen met klem aan Leefmilieu Brussel en aan de burgemeester van Brussel om de vergunning te weigeren die door de Amerikaanse ambassade werd aangevraagd voor de viering van 28 juni in het Jubelpark ter ere van de Verenigde Staten.

Dit evenement toestaan, komt neer op actieve steun aan het beleid van president Trump en aan de wereld die hij ons oplegt.

De Verenigde Staten staan al decennialang gecoördineerde klimaatactie in de weg, terwijl zij talloze destructieve beslissingen nemen. De oorlog in het Midden-Oosten is slechts de meest recente terreurdaad van het Amerikaanse leger, de grootste vervuiler ter wereld, terwijl de terugtrekking uit het Akkoord van Parijs zelfs de broze vooruitgang vernietigt die dat akkoord vertegenwoordigde. Deze regering behandelt onze planeet als haar privé-eigendom — onder meer door nog meer F-35-kerosine op het vuur te gooien.

Dat kunnen wij niet aanvaarden.

Hoe kan men de symbolische betekenis van een Amerikaanse viering in het hart van Europa niet zien? Hoe kan deze regering — in een land gebouwd op gestolen grond, dat de mensenrechten van zijn eigen inwoners schaamteloos schendt terwijl het genocide en klimaatinstorting financiert — gevierd worden in wat de grootste democratie ter wereld zou moeten zijn: de Europese Unie? Deze viering is een viering van een steeds verder oprukkend fascisme en autoritarisme.

Dat kunnen wij niet dulden.

Nu het aantal mensen dat in armoede leeft exponentieel toeneemt, is deze luisterrijke viering een kaakslag voor iedereen die Brussel en Europa als thuis beschouwt. Hoe kunnen wij gedwongen worden dit schouwspel van ultrarijken, wapenhandelaars en klimaatontkenners te aanschouwen in het hart van onze hoofdstad, terwijl gezinnen elke dag moeite hebben om hun huur te betalen en eten op tafel te zetten?

Dat zullen wij niet toestaan.

Wij roepen de burgemeester van Brussel en Leefmilieu Brussel op om de opdrachten die hun zijn toevertrouwd niet te verraden, hun verantwoordelijkheid op te nemen en te weigeren zich te onderwerpen aan het autoritaire Amerikaanse regime.

Aan alle bewegingen, collectieven, organisaties, verenigingen en burgers die bereid zijn zich te verzetten tegen de Verenigde Staten en hun wereld:
